This article describes a research work that uses the photo-essay as a tool of inquiry and creation to approach the museum. For this purpose, the work of Alberto Schommer is taken as an artistic reference. The study, carried out at the Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia, presents an approach focused on Educational Research Based on Visual Arts. Sixty-six initial teacher training students of the bachelor's degree in Basic Education program formed the sample. The results show how photography is significant as a tool for visual exploration. The students, as participants, developed an individual vision of the museum concept, based on artistic, aesthetic, and emotional experiences concerning the museum and its objects. The discussion of the images presented by the museum made it possible to resize the link between the museum space and the training of future teachers in basic education. In conclusion, the photo-essay stands out as an important visual tool for observation, analysis, interpretation, reflection, and creation to activate the role of the teacher.
