Introduction: One of the challenges posed by cancer to the health professionals is the communication of the diagnosis of the disease, because it is not a matter of protocol, but the first action that has an impact on the condition of the patients, therefore, it is necessary to review the way in which they are given information. Materials and methods: This is a reflective paper based on literature that addresses the relationship between communication and the course of treatment. Results: The silence and vagueness are common when professionals inform the patients. Discussion: This paper draws attention to the negative impact of the mentioned communication patterns in the course of the disease. Conclusions: The communication skills training should be strengthened so that communication becomes a tool to support the work of health professionals.
