Abstract
MATAMOROS-ROMERO, Guillermo Rufino. The Mexican Way Towards Low Economic Growth: A Spurious Interpretation of the Metaphor of Development as a Jigsaw Puzzle by Albert O. Hirschman. Ens. Econ. [online]. 2019, vol.29, n.54, pp.11-28. ISSN 0121-117X. https://doi.org/10.15446/ede.v29n54.75957.
This paper presents an explanation of Mexican low economic growth in recent years, based on the view of development and productive linkages of Albert O. Hirschman in his book The Strategy of Economic Development. It critically explains the process of market reforms put into practice since 1980's. Thereafter, the paper compares the view of development that supported such reforms with respect to the view of Hirschman. As a result, it obtains two opposing attitudes towards the government's role in the process of development. On the one hand, the paper theoretically relates development with productive linkages in the way Hirschman did. On the other hand, it establishes empirical relations by measuring Mexican linkages using input-output analysis. The results uphold Hirschman's view of development with the evidence for the Mexican case in the period of economic reforms.
