Abstract

Purpose. To evaluate metabolic behavior associated to diabetes mellitus and hypertension during the application ofa care program to improve nutritional and physical quality in the elderly. Methods. Comparative study in which work was carried out with 20 seniors selected by convenience criteria. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire assessing physical and nutritional aspects. At the same time, records were used to control anthropometric data, hypertension, capillary glycemia and lipid profile during the application of the program. Results. Population studied was an average of 69.17 years old, predominantly female patients (95%). During the implementation of the program a notorious improvement is observed regarding weight and capillary glycemia. Stability regarding cholesterol levels (9.74% improvement) and triglycerides (7.47% improvement), while hypertension and glycemia levels show no significant variation. Slight changes also found in body mass index (0.28 +0.882), reflecting a favorable evolution in adults' quality of life, corroborated with the Wilcoxon test (0,027). Conclusion. Metabolic behavior of diabetic elders reflected an improvement with the implementation of an appropriate care plan. Said plan shows 77% effectiveness related to the duration of the program, which is in turn reflected in the graphic behavior of data.
