Abstract

Objective: To understand needs and expectations experienced by the patient in the path to heart surgery in preoperative preparation. Methodology: Qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory study, carried out in two renowned charitable institutions of cardiac surgery in southern Brazil, which provide care to 60% of patients from the Sistema Único de Saúde. The participants in this study were 22 adult patients admitted to heart surgery. Data collection were performed using a semi-structured interview guide. Results: From the analysis of data, three categories emerged, as follows: Revealing indication of heart surgery and need for information, Difficulties in the path until reach surgery, and Ambiguous experienced feelings and possibilities of a new beginning. Conclusion: This study showed, as the main factors, both need for providing clear and simple information to patient, and need for accelerating taking of clinical examinations and scheduling surgery. As expectation, fear of procedure tempered for the hope of improvement arose.
