Abstract

BARON, María Alejandra Santos. Implications of COVID-19 on Security and the Role of the FAC in the Pandemic throughout 2020. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.2, pp.77-96.  Epub Dec 31, 2021. ISSN 1909-3063.  https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.5708.

On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a COVID-19 pandemic due to its outbreak and spread across several countries. The pandemic has had various social, economic, political, and security effects. This paper aims to describe the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic during 2020 on security and defense and the FAC's role in mitigating and containing the virus. The qualitative methodological approach allows describing the implications of the COVID-19 on national security and defense and the participation of the fac in mitigating the virus. The research showed that the COVID-19 pandemic impacted security and defense, such as the control exercised by the GAO over the civilian population and increased border controls by the military. It also entailed that the armed forces, particularly the FAC, used their aerial capabilities to mitigate and contain the virus.

Keywords : COVID-19; pandemic; security; defense; Colombian Air Force.
