Abstract
GUERRERO-MOSQUERA, Andrea. From La Guaira to Nueva España: Juan Nepomuceno and Blasphemy as a Freedom Strategy (1755-1796). Front. hist. [online]. 2023, vol.28, n.2, pp.100-125. Epub July 01, 2023. ISSN 2027-4688. https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.2510.
Through the Inquisition files, the strategies used by Juan Nepomuceno del Espíritu Santo to obtain freedom were analyzed. The freedom he sought was not only physical, but also spiritual. Therefore the most relevant aspects of his life, his trajectory, and the different interpretative connotations that the prisoner consigned to three faith-related crimes were identified in the text, and thus interact with these and see them as a vehicle to get out of prison. The files allow us to see a story that is connected at different points: the French Caribbean with New Granada and New Spain. All these semantic and spatial elements made it possible to recognize that the erudition on the laws and norms of the processes of freedom were not exclusive to a literate elite.
Keywords : La Guaira; San Juan de Ulúa; 18th century Inquisition; blasphemy; freedom.
