Abstract

PERILLA LOZANO, Leonor. Citizens and Others in Colombia during the First Half of the 19th Century. Trab. soc. [online]. 2017, n.19, pp.45-63. ISSN 2256-5493.

Not all the inhabitants of the Republic of Colombia held citizen status during the first half of the 19th century: only literate, adult males with property qualified as such. On the basis of documents regarding criminal cases and press articles, as opposed to constitutional texts and Congress archives, the article examines social life and citizen claims concerning abuses of authority in the State-society-individual relationship, as well as the presence of those others excluded from citizenship and from the official discourse.

Keywords : 19th century; citizenship; equality; liberal ideas; poor population; republic.
