Abstract

PERRONE, Guido  and  SANTARCANGELO, Juan E.. External Constraint and Import Substitution in Argentina: An Analysis of Recent History. Ens. Econ. [online]. 2018, vol.28, n.52, pp.31-61. ISSN 0121-117X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/ede.v28n52.72276.

In Argentina, as in most Latin American countries, industrial expansion periods have been traditionally limited by an external restriction due to the strong demand of imports by the local manufacturing production. Since 2003, and until recent years, the growth process of the Argentinian industry had not faced the limitations imposed by a chronic scarcity of foreign currency, a situation that brought back attention to this problem. Considering these circumstances, we set out to analyze the productive dynamics of three of the most critical sectors in the commercial deficit of the 2003-2014 period -automobile production, consumer electronics, and the electric sector-, in order to study the real possibilities of substituting imports and the impact of the measures concerning these sectors that were taken by the State to face the external constraint.
