Abstract

The article studies the approaches to two examples of Virgilian hypallage, tacitaeper amica silentia lunae (Aen.2.255) and ibant obscuri sola sub nocte per umbram (Aen.6.268) in three Spanish-American 20th century writers: Aurelio Espinosa Pólit, translator of Virgil's work, and writers Jorge Luis Borges and José Emilio Pacheco. To that effect, it discusses the state of literary and philological criticism (Norden, Heinze) of Virgil's work at the beginning of the century in Germany, as well as the so-called "aesthetic turn" carried out by that criticism, a spirit shared by the above-mentioned authors. Hypallage in Virgil is not a mere figure of speech, but one that acquires great importance in his poetic work, among other figures like metaphor or metonymy. The article studies the translation into Spanish of those figures and the way in which the three authors insert Virgi's verses into their respective aesthetic projects.
