Abstract
VELEZ LONDONO, JUAN DIEGO and GIRALDO SANDOVAL, MILLER. Strongyloidiasis treatment failure with ivermectin. Infect. [online]. 2007, vol.11, n.2, pp.110-120. ISSN 0123-9392.
Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease caused by nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. Hyperinfection, resulting from increased generation of filariform larvae, occurs when host immunity is impaired, especially by corticosteroid therapy and, less commonly, other immunosuppressive drugs, hematologic malignancies, or malnutrition. Infection with human T cell lymphotropic virus-1 (HTLV-1) is associated with hyperinfection, increased susceptibility to infection with Strongyloides, and refractoriness to treatment. As in this infection, ivermectina is the first therapeutical option; treatment failure and the possibility of resistence are critical issues to take into account.
Keywords : Strongyloides; hiperinfection; ivermectin.
