Abstract
BRANGIER, VÍCTOR. Political-Legal Culture: Social Management of the Good Judge Model. Central Zone of Chile, 1824-1875. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2019, vol.46, n.1, pp.231-254. ISSN 0120-2456. https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v46n1.75559.
The article discusses critically the attitudes and strategies deployed by José Mate Luna, a small farmer of the central zone of Chile, in the criminal suit he filed against a judge in his territory in the mid-nineteenth century, and examines the facets of his "political-legal culture". The document compiles case files of criminal accusations against lay judges, analyzed in the light of the role of justice in maintaining social balance in Spanish America. The results make evident the social management of the good judge model, a notion that integrated the legal and political culture of the Spanish monarchy and that of its American colonies, which were undergoing profound changes in the 19th century.
