Abstract
DIAZ, Jorge-Aurelio. Free Will as Philosophical-Theological Concept. Prax. filos. [online]. 2023, n.56, pp.59-78. Epub Apr 20, 2023. ISSN 0120-4688. https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i56.12337.
The concept of free will is analyzed in the light of the theologians Thomas Aquinas, who defends it, and John Calvin, who contests it. It shows the two senses of freedom that derive from it and how Christian individualism has been the conceptual foundation for liberal democracy. But if Christian doctrine has elements that compensate for its radical individualism, de-Christianized societies lack such elements and are in danger of becoming exacerbated individualisms.
Keywords : Thomas Aquinas; John Calvin; Free will; Freedom; Individualism; Democracy.
