Abstract
QUINTERO OTERO, Jorge David; PRIETO BUSTOS, William Orlando; BARRIOS AGUIRRE, Fernando and LEVILLER GUARDO, Laura Elena. Determiners of technical efficiency in colombian companies, 2001-2004. Semest. Econ. [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.22, pp.11-34. ISSN 0120-6346.
This article is intended to estimate determiners of technical efficiency for a sample of 1971 companies in Colombia from 2001 to 2004. Methodology has been divided in two stages; in the first one, a technical efficiency index is estimated by sectors through the use of a stochastic border model; in the second one, an economic model is adjusted over determiners of technical efficiency, using five different econometric specifications such as: Ordinary Least Squares (OMS), Tobit Model (TM), Robust Regression (RR), Quartile Regression (QR), and an Estimator of Censored Absolute Deviations (ECAD). The main result of the research has established that variables such as research and development expenses, asset size, and profitability are the main determiners of the technical efficiency index variation.
