Abstract
AKE, Lilia P.. Algebraic Character in the Mathematics Knowledge in Prospective Elementary School Teachers. Rev. Fac. Cienc. Tecnol. [online]. 2021, n.49, pp.15-34. Epub Jan 18, 2022. ISSN 0121-3814. https://doi.org/10.17227/ted.num49-9871.
The integration of algebraic thinking in elementary school is a current topic for the research in Didactics of Mathematics. However, this integration demands for the teachers the development of a knowledge that allows them to construct a vision to recognize the algebraic nature of mathematical tasks and promote algebraic thinking in elementary school children. This qualitative research analyzes the algebraic character of the mathematical knowledge of future teachers. We used theoretical proposals about didactic-mathematical knowledge and levels of algebraization that allowed, through the implementation of a questionnaire, to describe and analyze manifested knowledge of 40 elementary school training teachers when they solve mathematical tasks, identifying in their resolution the algebraic character revealed. The results show that future teachers have difficulties solving tasks using a consolidated algebraic knowledge. We conclude that it is necessary to provide future primary teachers with scenarios where they experience development processes for algebraic thinking related to the generalization of structural properties and functional relations that underlie mathematical ideas.
