Abstract
ISAAC CISNEROS, Gerardo. Null Voter Profile in the 2009 Midterm Federal Election in Mexico: Non-Party Affiliation and Cognitive Mobility. colomb.int. [online]. 2016, n.86, pp.51-80. ISSN 0121-5612. https://doi.org/10.7440/colombiaint86.2016.02.
The 2009 midterm federal congressional election in Mexico showed an unprecedented phenomenon in the country, since there was a substantial increase in the percentage of null votes. Unlike other research at the aggregate level, this study focuses on the individual analysis of the voters and shows a profile of the voter who annulled his or her vote in that election. The article emphasizes the fact that the main characteristics of anulling voters are their independence of political parties and their high level of cognitive mobility. It also evaluates the differentiated effect of the latter variable on the electoral behavior of independent voters, and concludes by arguing for the need to include independence from political parties and cognitive mobility in the analysis of voting behavior.
