Abstract
HAUG, María Cecilia. Between the novel and the document. The expeditionary narrative of Filiberto de Oliveira Cézar (1891-1897). Mem. Soc. [online]. 2017, vol.21, n.43, pp.50-65. ISSN 0122-5197. https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.mys21-43.ndne.
This work aims to analyze the perspective of a man who, at the end of the 19th century, combined the practice of inland travelling with writing. That man is the politician, member of the military, and writer Filiberto de Oliveira Cezar, who wrote and published a series of stories about the Argentinian «desert» of the 19th century, where he narrates the adventures of an expeditionary force, their itineraries through unknown geographies, as well as their relationships with individuals different from them. The focus of the work is on the images, which come from recognized artists of the time. From there, the idea is to create a relationship between them and the written discourse. The main idea that runs through the investigation is that the images, far from being mere illustrations of the text or faithful record of what had been seen, established and built a way of seeing the other, which articulates discourses and creates specific ideologies.
