Abstract

BONVINI, Alessandro. The exiles of the Risorgimento. Mazzinianism in the Southern Cone. Mem. Soc. [online]. 2018, vol.22, n.44, pp.42-65. ISSN 0122-5197.  https://doi.org/10.11144/javeriana.mys22-44.ermc.

Between 1835 and 1848, tens of exiles from the Mazzinian movement left the Italian Peninsula to settle in Uruguay. From Montevideo, they continued their political struggle by founding new newspapers, establishing alliances with other diaspora communities and building military forces, which took part in local conflicts. In this way, exile was a funda mental experience for the revival of a Young Italy in the Rio de la Plata area, the develop ment of republicanism in the Atlantic world and the creation of new connections between the Old Continent and America.

Keywords : Giuseppe Mazzini; Atlantic History; Republicanism; Generation of 37; Italian Legion.
