Abstract
HERRAN, Oscar Fernando and BAUTISTA, Leonelo E. Quality of mature population's diet and their alimentary pattern in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Colomb. Med. [online]. 2005, vol.36, n.2, pp.94-102. ISSN 1657-9534.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the food consumption pattern in 2002-2003 with that observed in 1998. METHODS: Participants 20 to 60 years old, consuming their regular diet, completed two periods of seven days of weighted intake registry in 1998 and in 2002-2003. Individual average nutrient intake was calculated using food composition tables. t-tests were used to compare age and gender specific means of nutrient intake in both periods. RESULTS: Cereals, roots, tubers and plantain were the major contributors to daily energy intake (43.2%), followed by meat, eggs and dried leguminous plants (26%), sugar and sweets (12.1%), dairy products (10.2%), and fat (9.9%). Approximately 16% of the daily energy intake came from alcoholic drinks. Compared to 1998, the daily energy intake has increased 12% in men and 10% in women. Significant decreases were observed in the consumption of vegetables (60% in men and 20% in women) and fruits (30% in men and 16% in women). However, consumption of fats has remained stable. CONCLUSION: Daily energy intake seems to be increasing in this population. However, there has been a significant decrease in the intake of vegetables and fruits. These changes could result in an increased risk of chronic non-transmissible diseases in this population.
