EGUILUZ-CARDENAS, Itzel; TORRES-PEREDA, Pilar and ALLEN-LEIGH, Betania. Perceptions about condom use and STI/HIV: Mexican migrants and non-migrants to the U.S. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.2, pp.515-526. ISSN 1692-715X.
Abstract (analytical): This qualitative study explores the perceptions of young Mexican migrants and non-migrants to the United States about condom use related to STI/HIV. Forty men and women aged between 15-24 years old were interviewed; participants were native of two Mexican municipalities. Inquires about the social construction of sexuality, and the perception of risk and vulnerability in relation to condom use and STI´s were presented at the interviews. Findings indicate that the perception of risk of STI´s/HIV and condom use, was mediated by the idea of knowing "who is who", that reflects social processes of confidence and social control, creating typologies of partners, that could contribute to increase the risk and vulnerability of young people against STI´s/HIV.
