Abstract
VARGAS VILLAMIZAR, Carlos Enrique. Multidimensional security: between conceptual ambiguity and pragmatic necessity. rev.relac.int.estrateg.segur. [online]. 2022, vol.17, n.2, pp.103-117. Epub Dec 31, 2022. ISSN 1909-3063. https://doi.org/10.18359/ries.6140.
multidimensional security is a concept that has been in use in security studies for twenty years, but still lacks a consensus definition that satisfies the academic community. The relevance of this concept, which arises from its implications for public policies at different levels of decision-making, is key to increasing efforts and clarifying the theoretical and pragmatic panorama of multidimensional security. For this reason, this article provides a literature review on security topics, followed by a historical account of the concept of security, leading to the hemispheric proposal of multidimensional security. From there, a definition of multidimensional security is proposed in light of critical security studies, including greater instrumentalization of the concept in public policy.
