Abstract
MUYETTA, DANIELA; LUCCHESE, MARCELA and FERNANDEZ, RUTH. Reading in content specific areas: the experience at the School of Medicine, U.N.C. Zona prox. [online]. 2013, n.19, pp.86-94. ISSN 2145-9444.
First level undergraduate students are usually required to read academic texts. These genres suppose specific reading practices, which are not always made explicit (Carlino, 2005). Hence, a correct understanding of such texts requires specific strategic, lexico-grammatical and discursive competences. These competences can be acquired under the guidance of teachers who are willing to model and to encourage university level reading practices. This essay presents and describes the proyect carried out at the Ciclo de Nivelación en la Facultad de Cs. Médicas (UNC) to instruct students in academic reading in a comprehensive and reflective way. Our experience consisted of four stages: teachers' instruction, students' instruction, reading comprehension activities design and integration of content specific activities with reading comprehension exercises. This essay argues in favour of the explicit teaching of academic practices, which, in turn, needs to be supported by the institutions.
