Abstract

VASQUEZ, Rafael; RODRIGUEZ, Esther; MARTIN CARDINAL, Elena  and  RODRIGUEZ-LOZADA ALLENDE, Jorge. Prognostic factors for children and adolescents with obsessive compulsive disorder. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2003, vol.32, n.3, pp.249-259. ISSN 0034-7450.

Objective: To review and update the information available on the prognostic factors of OCD in children and adolescents. Method: Conducted article search in Medline dating from 1991 to the present and articles published in our country about the subject. Results: The following factors for a favorable prognosis were found: Response to medication in the first eight weeks, accomplishment of the goals of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy during the first week, ability to report symptoms and follow them up, and the absence of co-morbidity. Among the unfavorable factors, the following were found: Parents’ psychopathology, presence of tics or appearance of these during treatment, traits of paranoid, schizoid and/or schizotypal personality, not receiving treatment or delayed initiation of it, and co-morbidity. Conclusions: The determination of predicting factors still offers contradictory results.

Keywords : Obsessive-compulsive disorder; children; adolescents; prognosis.
