Abstract

GALLEGO GOMEZ, Juan Carlos. Evolution and neuroscience: NEUROBIOLOGY, PHYLOGENETICS AND CHAOS THEORY. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2004, vol.33, suppl.1, pp.25-36. ISSN 0034-7450.

The following proposal is a multidisciplinary approach using the fundamentals of chaos theory, evolution of the human brain and phylogenetic systematics to try to contribute to the study of the human brain in normal and pathological conditions, evaluating the potential use of these disquisitions in teaching and psychiatric practice. It is exposed here that the functioning of the brain can best be understood from the viewpoint of the non-lineal and undeterministic dynamics of chaos theory, possibly explaining the origins of intelligence, mood and mental disorders. Finally, as a new contribution it is postulated that the methodology of phylogenetics could be a useful tool for the classification of mental disorders also helping to comprehend them better.

Keywords : Neurobiology; evolution; chaos; phylogenetics; epistemology.
