Abstract

In the intellectual scene of 19th century Colombia, Soledad Acosta de Samper (1833-1913) stands out for pioneering the recognition of the significance of women for society. This purpose can be found in her work as a journalist as well as in her essays and literary works. Thus, the aim of the article is to analyze from the standpoint of social criticism how are configured the female characters in the works Dolores: cuadros de la vida de una mujer y Teresa la limeña: páginas de la vida de una peruana. Based on the analysis of these novels, the article seeks to show how she gives voice to the main characters of her work, thus looking into the intimacy of female thinking. With the latter, she not only contributed to the strengthening of the ideals of virtue fostered during 19th century, but also of the necessity of intellectual education of women as a fundamental requirement for the training of ideal female citizens.
