Abstract

VIGUERA RUIZ, Rebeca. Religious Life and Pastoral Ministry of a Spanish Cleric in the Beginning of 19th Century. The Case of Rafael Crisanto Alesón. Franciscanum [online]. 2015, vol.57, n.163, pp.417-440. ISSN 0120-1468.

In the Spanish situation of major transformations that occurred between the eighteenth and nineteenth century, citizens of all social classes and professional occupations were the true architects of all cultural, ideological and political changes that took place. In an attempt to better understand the essence of some of these popular and religious social components, this paper aims to briefly present the most relevant biographical notes about Rafael D. Crisanto Alesón Alesón as a first approach to his life. Alesón was a character who lived between those two centuries which meant the emergence of the Enlightenment firstly and liberalism thereafter, that would eventually overthrow the Old Regime monarchy. A man of the Church, well educated, who enjoyed a comfortable economic status that gave him a good education and high social consideration from his neighbors. These pages seek to define this religious figure who, from a local level and a humble exercise of his religious ministry, helped to spread the message of the Catholic faith at a time of great stress and generalized crisis in Spain.

Keywords : Catholic Church; clergy; 19th century; sermons; education.
