Abstract
RAMIREZ BACCA, RENZO and LONDONO URIZA, ELIDIO ALEXANDER. Colonization, Settlement, and Property in Southwestern Antioquia. The Case of the Municipality of Jardín (Antioquia, Colombia), 1830-1931. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.2, pp.74-114. ISSN 0120-2456.
The main object of study of this article are the dynamics of colonization, settlement, and property in the municipality of Jardín (Antioquia, Colombia) between 1830 and 1931. The results identify forms of colonization, trends in the distribution of fallow lands, settlement of the locality, the founding process, the public organization of the municipality, and the socio-spatial relationship of its first inhabitants. Certain strategies for land appropriation become evident-sales and purchase, transfers, mortgages, exchange, donations, and leases-in a limited mining and agricultural market. The different land uses show a scarce presence of forms such as sharecropping or leasing, as well as a certain degree of speculation with land prices on the part of the founding colonizers. However, it is also possible to observe sales and purchase operations involving small and medium properties which later specialized in coffee production. The historical analysis was based on official public documents, notary public office records, and secondary bibliography.
Keywords : colonization; settlement; property; mining; land market; coffee growing.
