Abstract

ALBA CASTRO, JOSÉ MIGUEL. The Bogotá Futuro Plan: The First Urban Modernization Attempt. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2013, vol.40, n.2, pp.179-208. ISSN 0120-2456.

Bogotá's rapid growth at the beginning of the 20th century led Ricardo Olano, promoter of the Medellín Futuro plan, to propose the Bogotá Futuro plan to the Society for the beautification of in 1917. The Bogotá Futuro plan (1923-1925) incorporated the urban modernization ideals of City Planning, after discussion with participants in National Improvements congresses, public works authorities at department and municipal levels, beautification and engineer associations. The plan, partially supported in the modernization of the municipal administration (1915-1924) and considered as an expansion plan, contains proposals for interventions of the main streets, which were reinterpreted by Karl Brunner in his 1934 and 1935 projects. Although the city's institutions were actually modernized, it was impossible to constitute a project for a modern society. Thus, while the plan proposed a beautiful, monumental and compact city with French, English, and Spanish influences, Bogotá was actually a city characterized by small plots of land and shacks.
