This article explores the limits of freedom of the press in New Granada in light of the prosecution against the newspaper El Alacrán in 1849. It details and analyzes the regulations regarding freedom of the press, how the capital's press joined ranks in defense of the profession and the collision between the executive and judicial branches in the framework of these trials. The text suggests some reaches of this analysis: forms of reading and circulation of the press it raises; the organization and operation of the press it evidences; and the multiple actors that are involved. Finally, it questions the representativeness of the juries of the press and their importance in the consolidation of the citizens.
