Abstract
BONNETT VELEZ, DIANA. Social History to the beat of the 60s. A Reading of La personalidad histórica de Colombia (The Historic Personality of Colombia). Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2017, vol.44, n.1, pp.85-100. ISSN 0120-2456. https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v44n1.61217.
The author examines from a double, historic and historiographical, approach Jaime Jaramillo Uribe's work La personalidad histórica de Colombia (The Historic Personality of Colombia) written in 1969. In this work, Jaramillo looked at the differences between the case of Colombia and Hispanic America, and tried to synthesize the most particular characteristics of Colombia's history. The article emphasizes two very significant historiographical concepts for Jaramillo regarding social history: "demographic density" and "cultural density". It also addresses his reflections and criticism on his own writings twenty years later, defining them as "open" texts with latent discussions on how the historian should approach history, particularly the debate between generalizations and the study of specificities.
