Abstract

ORTEMBERG, PABLO. The Centennial of the Liberating Expedition to Peru: A Tribute to Confraternity? Appropriations among Argentina, Chile and Peru. Anu. colomb. hist. soc. cult. [online]. 2021, vol.48, n.1, pp.357-382.  Epub Jan 29, 2021. ISSN 0120-2456.  https://doi.org/10.15446/achsc.v48n1.91554.

In 1920 the centenary of the Libertadora Expedition was simultaneously celebrated in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. This commemoration anticipated a cycle of Latin American centenaries in the third decade of the 20th century. This article analyzes the 1920 commemoration from three scales of appropriation: local, national, and international. It examines the modes of commemoration and recovers the meanings, performances, and narratives employed by the three national governments and also by actors from civil associations. It relates the celebrations to the geopolitical interests at stake, in particular the growing "Pacific question". The analysis focuses on the intense local use of the event by the city of Pisco and its international instrumentalization by Peruvian President Augusto B. Leguia to get closer to Argentina and isolate Chile as sort of rehearsal of the centennials of 1921 and 1924. But these latter countries would downplay this particular anniversary, as their programs were shaped by the associative initiative rather than the governmental one. This analysis is part of a historiographic current that focuses on the connected and transnational nature ofnational commemorations. Methodologically, it is based on the study ofcommercial press and illustrated magazines from Argentina, Chile, and Peru, and of documentation from the archives of the three countries' foreign services.

Keywords : centennial; commemoration; diplomacy; liberating expedition; "pacific question"; transnational.
