Abstract

MOYA PARDO, Constanza. Some postmodernist ideas about language. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2008, n.21, pp.167-188. ISSN 0120-338X.

The twentieth century is characterized by the importance given to language not only because it originates our actions, but because it is with language that we build our world and an understanding of what is real. Linguists and philosophers of postmodern thinking give a prominent place to subjectivity as well as to the intrinsic relationship between communication and reality; they are inclined towards ideas and approaches that are less Universalist -proper of Modernity and of the lexicon of Metaphysics- and are interested instead in phenomena related to customary language such as contextualism, pragmatics, communicative intent, usage, polysemy, the non-neutrality of language, language plasticity, language metaphor, inference, and the search for meaning. These phenomena are referred to as linguistic turn.

Keywords : postmodernism; linguistic turn; language in use; the plasticity of the word; contextualism; sense and inference.
