Abstract

SAL PAZ, Julio César  and  MALDONADO, Silvia D. DELIMITATION AND SCOPE OF THE TERM "COMMUNITY" IN THE CONTEXT OF DISCOURSE STUDIES. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.1, pp.111-140. ISSN 0120-338X.

Abstract As an umbrella term that has been used to cover all sorts of human groups, the term "community" is as widely used as difficult to define. Furthermore, it is used in different contexts, with different intentions. Consequently, homogeneous criteria are not needed in order to conceptualize a community, just as there are no univocal interpretations of "culture" or "society" in the field of the human sciences. Language, linguistic, speech, discursive, semiotic imagined, interpretive, practice, real, or virtual communities are some of the conceptual variants of a notion that is particularly important in the context of discourse studies. The article delimits the scope of the terminological unit "community" by tracing and carrying out a detailed analysis of the entry in specialized dictionaries, as well as of the different definitions coined by some representative researchers in this field of work.

Keywords : terminology; community; discourse analysis; discourse studies; specialized dictionaries.
