Abstract
BAQUERO VELASQUEZ, Julia M and WESTPHAL MONTT, Germán F. A SYNCHRONIC ANALYSIS OF CHILEAN AND RIVER PLATE VERBAL VOSEO. Forma funcion, Santaf, de Bogot, D.C. [online]. 2014, vol.27, n.2, pp.11-40. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v27n2.47558.
This article questions the traditional account of Chilean and River Plate voseo verb forms which derives them from those corresponding to vosotros. To that effect, it uses at least six different rules, including three monophthongization processes that completely lack phonological motivation. Alternatively, the article argues that the voseo forms are not synchronically derived from the second person plural forms, but rather from underlying representations that coincide with those corresponding to the non-honorific second person singular. The proposed theory requires the use of only one special rule in the case of Chilean voseo. This rule and other rules that are independently justified in the language make it possible to derive all voseo verb forms. The theoretical framework is that of classic generative phonology. All voseo verb forms have been verified using information provided by the Royal Spanish Academy's Diachronic Corpus of Spanish (CORDE), Internet users and the authors' linguistic intuitions.
