Abstract

In this paper we present the results of a research about the pronominal use of usted in three municipalities of the Colombian state of Antioquia: 1) The city of Medellin, i.e. an urban zone, 2) Carmen de Viboral, i.e. a semi-rural area which is an hour from Medellin by car and 3) Andes, i.e. a rural area located about three hours from Medellin by car. The research population is formed by informants aged between 13 and 34 years. The study social variable is informants' living place, i.e. an urban area (Medellin), a semi-rural zone (Carmen de Viboral) or a rural zone (Andes). This research was carried out by using a questionnaire. 1490 informants answered the questionnaire that lists different types of interaction. Three statistical techniques were applied to these data: 1) Estimated optimal sample size for polynomial distributions, 2) Analysis of variance (ANOVA), and 3) Hypothesis test for proportions. Statistics show that in most solidarity interpersonal relations tuteo is used more frequently in Medellin than in Carmen de Viboral or Andes.
