Abstract

MALAVER RODRIGUEZ, Florentino  and  VARGAS PEREZ, Marisela. Innovative behavior in the Colombian industry: an exploration of recent changes. Cuad. Adm. [online]. 2004, vol.17, n.27, pp.33-61. ISSN 0120-3592.

In order to know the reasons behind the innovative behavior of companies in the industrial sector, this article presents and analyzes the innovation results shown by manufacturing companies in the First Survey on Technological Development in the Colombian Industry (EDT1), carried out in 1996, and EDT2. These results are registered in the pilot test applied in 2003 to 101 companies. The evolutionary theory of technological change is integrated with the resource and capability approach. The comparison between innovative companies indicators in both surveys suggests that, in a context characterized by poor public and managerial investment in science and technology, there is considerable progress in innovation efforts and results between 1996 and 2003. This phenomenon can also be observed in the relation between innovative industrial companies and the national system of innovation. Finally, the article proposes hypotheses and work lines to better understand the innovation process in Colombia.

Keywords : technological innovation survey; innovation in Colombian industry; innovative behavior; technological capabilities.
