Abstract

GOMEZ POSADA, Julder A. Disagreement and Misunderstanding. Prax. filos. [online]. 2012, n.34, pp.165-186. ISSN 0120-4688.

This article is part of a research project on a particular kind of disagreement. The project seeks to determine whether this kind of disagreement can be understood as a field of argumentation in which disagreements are not resolved even though there are not necessarily linguistic or conceptual misunderstandings and by virtue of the nature of the constitution of some human social phenomena. This article argues that the usual distinction between concepts and conceptions (two people are in a genuine disagreement when they have two conceptions of the same concept) is insufficient to assure that the people speak about the same thing and that, therefore, there is no misunderstanding between them. For this purpose, this article has two parts, the first one provides three explanations for the disagreement that constitutes the background of this discussion, and the second one presents the question whether the people who disagree speak about the same thing and the discussion is genuine.

Keywords : Disagreement; Misunderstanding; Perelman; Gallie; Ricoeur.
