Abstract
ZAMORA CALVO, José María. The Stoics and the question of familiarity (οικείωσις): the proposal of Hierocles. Prax. filos. [online]. 2017, n.45, pp.11-27. ISSN 0120-4688. https://doi.org/10.25100/pfilosofica.v0i45.6051.
TheElements of Ethicsof Hierocles, together with the extant extracts of Stobaeus, constitute an orderly presentation of Stoic ethics from foundations. In this paper, I propose to analyze the Stoic argument of the notion of familiarity (οἰκείωσις), and the thesis that the first familiar thing, whether we are human beings or animals, is not only the perception of oneself but also the impulse to self-preservation. Hierocles exhorts to put oneself in the place of the others and to open progressively in concentric circles to humanity, without demolishing, from the center of reason, the perspective of what is proper and familiar.
Keywords : oikeiosis; stoicism; self-preservation; interpersonal relationships.
