Abstract

Objective: To determine the diversity of Lutzomyia species in the urban area the City of Sincelejo, Colombia, and to evaluate the temporal changes in abundance of these vectors. Materials and methods: Seven neighborhoods of Sincelejo, the capital of the department of Sucre, were selected for sampling throughout one year. Sand flies were collected monthly and fortnightly using Shannon and CDC lights traps, respectively, installed in peridomi-ciliary environments. Sand fly species diversity was analyzed, as well as the relationship of the abundance with climate variables. Results: A total of 2064 sand flies belonging to seven species of Lutzomyia were collected, including Lutzomyia evansi, Lutzomyia gomezi, Lutzomyia dubitans, Lutzomyia cayennensis cayennensis, Lutzomyia rangeliana, Lutzomyia panamensis, and Lutzomyia trinidadensis. Lutzomyia evansi was the most abundant species comprising 79,7% of the sand flies collected, followed by Lutzomyia gomezi which represented 10,5%. The highest abundance of Lutzomyia evansi was recorded in May, September and December. Statistical analysis showed that the abundance of this sand fly species was positive and significantly correlated with accumulated precipitation during the month before sampling. Conclusion: Lutzomyia evansi is the most abundant sand fly species in Sincelejo, and its abundance is directly related with rainfall lagged by one month.
