Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: To make a review of the available literature about the pathophysiology of endometrial polyps (EP) development. Methods: A search was conducted using Medline database and the browser Pubmed in order to retrieve relevant information related to the pathophysiology of endometrial polyps, using as search terms endometrial polyps, including publications from 2000 through 2011. Results: The factors associated with the endometrial polyps can be summarized within hormonal, inflammatory, proliferative and genetic factors. Related to the hormonal influence, it has been demonstrated by an increase in estrogens and progestagen receptors, and overexpression of aromatase in endometrial tissue of EP. Related with inflammatory and proliferative factors EP are associated with the increase of mastocytes activated concentration, increase of cycloxigenase2 levels and increase of other inhibiting apoptosis substances such as Bcl 2 and Ki67. Furthermore, EP has been associated with genetic abnormalities in various chromosomes, together with rearrangement produced by high mobility proteins. Conclusions: In spite of the EP etiology being unknown, it could be established that for it to occur requires a proliferative process stimulated by hormonal factors associated with an inflammatory process
