Abstract

Malaria, both in Colombia and worldwide, is an alarming and increasing problem. This in mainly due to factors such as the escalating resistance of the parasite to first-line drugs. In this country, resistance to chloroquine fluctuates between 67%-97%, to sulfadoxine -pyrimethamine is 22% and to amodiaquine, 8%-10%. Aditioally, the lack of productions of amodiaquine. Has resulted in the proposal by the Colombia Ministry of Heal to use mafloquine for treatment of non - complicated P.falciparum malaria. Therefore, we reviewed the history, of mefloquine as well as it chemistry, mechanism of action, pharmacokinestics. Pharmacodynamics, clinical uses, adverse effects and emergent resistance.
