Abstract

BOSEMBERG, Luis E. THE UNITED STATES AND THE MIDDLE EAST: MODERATION, RIVALRY, AND HEGEMONY. hist.crit. [online]. 2003, n.26, pp.9-28. ISSN 0121-1617.

This article, which divides the history of the U.S. presence in the región into different periods - moderation, rivalry, and hegemony- refers to the superpower's interests, triumphs, failures, and mistakes. Taking the complexity of the región into account, it shows how diverse motives such as oil interests, rivalry with the Soviet Union, and support for Israel have led to escalation. The author concludes that since the U.S. role in the región is indisputable, it is not only necessary to take said superpower's traditional concerns into account, but other realities as well.

Keywords : United States; middle east; international relations; iraq; israel; palestinians; arab nationalism; oil; persian gulf wars.
