Abstract

HERNANDEZ OSPINA, Mónica Patricia. Forms of Spanish territoriality in the Gobernación of Chocó during the 18th century. hist.crit. [online]. 2006, n.32, pp.12-37. ISSN 0121-1617.

The article explores the nuances of Spanish territoriality in Chocó during the eighteenth century. To do this, it examines the Spanish practices appropriating space, stressing those aspects that permitted there to be variations within that territoriality. The article first considers the different ways Chocó has been dealt with in the colonial historiography by referring to the most important historical studies that address the region. Then, based on Spanish practices of territoriality, it develops the argument that despite some traits that point to Chocó as a frontier territory, there were also other forms of Spanish territoriality in the region that qualify this character.

Keywords : Territory; territoriality; spatial configuration; Chocó; Nóvita; Citará.
