Abstract

MORALES TEJEDA, Aida. THE MATERIAL UNIVERSE OF DOMESTIC LIFE AMONG THE ELITE OF SANTIAGO DE CUBA, 1830-1868. hist.crit. [online]. 2009, n.38, pp.96-121. ISSN 0121-1617.

This article explores the material and domestic world of the elite from Santiago de Cuba from the perspective of the Arts. In particular, it shows how a study of furniture highlights the changes that occurred between 1830 and 1868: in terms of mentalities and the idea of comfort in the bourgeois world of Santiago society on the one hand; and, on the other, the impact of a large and dynamic group of people who, coming from Saint Domingue or directly from France, settled in the city. Its aim is to demonstrate how the material world of Santiago's aristocracy was transformed by the influence of customs brought by the French settlers in the city.

Keywords : Santiago de Cuba; Housing; Symbols; French Culture; Furniture.
