Abstract

The article carries out a detailed historiographic analysis of the evolution of the sugar cane ethanol production in Brazil. The issue of biofuels has acquired new importance in recent years due to high oil prices and the global warming phenomenon. The objective of the article is to show how this process of development used to take place, highlighting its advantages and disadvantages. The methodology used included the use of statistical data, consultation of official documents (laws and international treaties), and a review of the existing literature on the subject. The conclusion reached is that the ethanol production caused important socio-spatial transformations in Brazil and has a strong potential of change for the near future.
