Abstract
PITOMBEIRA CARVALHO, Graziane de Araújo and SIEBEN, Airton. From the Island of São José to the Collective Resettlement of Baixão in Babaçulândia (TO): Effects of the Usina Hidroeléctrica de Estreito in Amazonia. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2019, vol.28, n.1, pp.175-191. ISSN 0121-215X. https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v28n1.73572.
In 2010 and in view of the layout designed for the Estreito Hydroelectric Power Plant (Usina Hidroeléctrica de Estreito) -UHEE (Maranhão, Brazil)-, the inhabitants of the island of São José (Tocantins, Brasil), formerly located in Babaçulândia (Tocantins, Brasil), were deterritorialized due to the planning of the dam for the power plant. The objective of this article is to analyse the territorial changes of the community of the island of São José, in Babaçulândia, affected by the UHEE in order to identify the changes in their ways of life. The research was carried out based on a qualitative approach, interviews with closed-ended and open-ended questions were applied between November and December 2017. The departure of those inhabitants from their lands has caused social and cultural turmoil, since their connection to the territory went beyond mere questions of residence and physical survival.
