Abstract

STRECK, Danilo R. José Martí, Paulo Freire and the Construction of a Latin American Pedagogical Imaginary. Pedagogía y Saberes [online]. 2017, n.46, pp.55-63. ISSN 0121-2494.

The article analyzes the contribution of José Martí and Paulo Freire for the constitution of a Latin American pedagogical imaginary. There are highlighted three aspects: a] Latin America as a locus of pedagogical production having, in these two intellectuals, the ideas serving as basis for this proposal; b] the coexistence of different temporalities in Latin America, and its implication for education; c] the presence of a critical cosmopolitan pedagogical vision. In the conclusion it is argued that it is fundamental to keep in tension the respect for the legacy, and the capacity and willingness to recreate. The radical thought of Martí and Freire provides two important conditions for carrying out this task: the freedom in relation to closed canons, and the freedom to reflect on one's life experience and practice.

Keywords : José Martí; Paulo Freire; Latin American pedagogy.
