This article provides reflections on teachers' challenges in the initial years of elementary school concerning their teaching and curriculum practices. The theoretical reference of the research includes studies on the curriculum and the teaching practices. The research, with a qualitative approach, consisted of interviews with teachers from the initial years of a teaching institution of the municipal public network of the municipal network in a city in the north of Santa Catarina - Brazil. Through content analysis, the results highlight the need for the professionalization of teachers and curricular autonomy. There is a need for a collective discussion of an educational project that shares a curriculum that respects the cultural and social diversity of children and the community.
