Abstract

AGUILERA PENA, Mario. FARC: RISE AND DECLINE OF A WAR MODEL. anal.polit. [online]. 2013, vol.26, n.77, pp.85-111. ISSN 0121-4705.

This article examines the war model adopted by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC),considering that it is inspired by the great Marxist military strategies. The text traces the origins of the model and its development throughout the conflict, assessing the dynamics of its most outstanding elements, represented in the organization of an irregular army, remarkable growth and territorial takeover, setting of a national rear area and attempt to militarily seize the capital. At the same time, the article highlights the political-military limitations of the guerrilla organization and the impact of counterinsurgency measures implemented by the security forces and paramilitary groups. It also analyzes the stubborn persistence of the FARC in sustaining a War Plan that had been revised in several of its key components. The article concludes by identifying the signs of a new strategic focus of the guerrillas and what can be expected from the opening of talks with the government.

Keywords : war strategies; Prolonged Popular War; insurrectionary War; FARC strategy, internal conflict; conflict ending.
