Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Cecilia Graciela. Honduras: Towards a Reconfiguration of the Party System Following the General Elections of 2013. colomb.int. [online]. 2015, n.85, pp.209-226. ISSN 0121-5612.  https://doi.org/10.7440/colombiaint85.2015.07.

This paper analyzes the results of the general elections held on November 24th, 2013 in Honduras in which Juan Orlando Hernández, a member of the conservative National Party, emerged as the winner. The results of these elections, marked by the crisis of 2009, allowed the ruling party to continue in power. The present analysis focuses on the political context in which the elections were held, as well as the main challenges the country faces. The article also discusses the effects of the electoral process on the Honduran party system, highlighting the transition from iron-clad bipartisanship to an incipient multi-party system that will condition the political scene in the years to come.

Keywords : Honduras; general elections; party system; governability; insecurity.
